Overview

Nestled along the serene shores of Ballantynes Cove in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Fish and Ships offers an authentic taste of Maritime seafood tradition in a charming, unpretentious setting. This fish and chips restaurant serves up hearty portions that satisfy both the appetite and the soul, making it a favored stop for locals and travelers alike.

The main attraction here is, of course, the Fish and Chips—featuring freshly caught haddock, battered to a golden crisp and paired with perfectly cooked fries. The “One Piece Fish and Chips” stands out as a generous, satisfying meal, while the “Clam Strips and Fries” and scallops add delightful variety for seafood lovers seeking different textures and flavors. Each bite reflects the freshness of the Atlantic, enhanced by simple, well-executed preparation.

Beyond the classic fried offerings, Fish and Ships also invites you to savor their rich seafood chowder—a creamy blend bursting with chunks of fish, lobster, and scallops that truly captures the essence of the region’s bounty. This warming dish complements the lighter fare and offers a comforting option, especially on cooler days.

The experience is enhanced by the restaurant’s unique location—a small shack right on Cove Wharf Road, perfectly situated near popular hiking trails and beach spots. This makes it an ideal pit stop for outdoor enthusiasts and families exploring the scenic beauty of Antigonish County. With a handful of picnic tables overlooking the peaceful cove, the space encourages casual dining where the focus is squarely on fresh, flavorful food served with Maritime hospitality.

Fish and Ships caters to a wide audience: from hikers winding down the Cape George trail, to families craving a hearty lunch, to road trippers seeking an authentic seafood snack. Customer reviews frequently praise the generous portion sizes, the taste of the coleslaw that accompanies the meals, and the inviting atmosphere that transforms a quick meal into a memorable experience.

Adding to the charm is a small selection of burgers, chicken fingers, and famously good ice cream—a perfect finish to a meal by the water. Whether you’re stopping by for a snack or settling in for a full dinner, Fish and Ships embraces simplicity and quality. It’s a compelling choice for anyone wanting to enjoy classic Maritime seafood with a view and heart.

Great place to get lunch or a snack. The seafood chowder was the best I’ve had. Lots of chunks of fish, lobster and even scallops. Haddock bites were great as well and the ice cream was delicious. Just a small shack that you order at with a few picnic tables at a small fishing cove.
